Side effects of Glucosamine include insomnia, and mild and temporary digestive complaints such as abdominal pain, poor appetite, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and vomiting. Drowsiness, headache also have been reported. In rare human cases, the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin has been linked with temporarily rised blood pressure and heart rate and could cause palpitations.
Glucosamine could increase the risk of bleeding. People with allergies to shellfish should ensure that their Glucosamine is not derived from shellfish.
A Glucosamine side effect proven in research is increased insulin resistance, reduced glucose uptake by cells and reduced liver glycogen production. This overloads the Pancreas, causing increased insulin production, and raises the blood glucose level.
A most serious side effect of Glucosamine after chronic use is the onset of type 2 Diabetes.
