Salvia Divinorum side effects

Salvia Divinorum side effectsEven though Salvinorin A is not toxic, nothing is known about the long-term side effects of Salvia Divinorum. Experience with another hallucinogen (LSD) teaches us that such substances can and at least sometimes do have serious dangers - such as increased risk of suicide.
At very low dosages, Salvia can act as an antidepressant. Low dosages often yield "interesting" experiences. In larger dosages, the person fully loses control over mind and body, does not percieve anything or anybody like they really are, and can start violently trash about or run out of the house and underneath a car. People who have experienced this generally never want to use Salvia again.

Motoric Impairment with Salvia

A main danger of Salvia is the fact that especially at higher dosages, motoric coordination is zero and the user starts stumbling and rolling throught the room, breaking furniture and possibly bones in the process. Driving a vehicle or operating machinery is obviously extremely dangerous, under the influence of Salvia. By all means make sure all sources of fire, all open flames are secured because in case candles are lit, the risk of causing a fire and not being able to do anything about it is enormous.
Another side effect of Salvia Divinorum is the socalled "bad trip", euphemistically called "disphoria".
Arguably "positive" side effects of Salvia Divinorum include the feeling of moving through space, unifying with objects like a chair or a table, a complete experience of understanding of the world, strange feelings of altered gravity, a loss of the self, changing of geometry of the surroundings, the experience of multiple simultaneous realities and out of body experiences.
Salvia effects include feelings of hotness or coldness, lack of muscle coordination, skin swelling, chills or goosebumps, increased heart rate (tachycardia) or increased tear production.

Psychological side effects of Salvia Divinorum

Psychological side effects of Salvia Divinorum include anxiety, irritability, (extreme) dizziness, drowsiness, sleeping difficulty, mood effects, lightheadedness, racing thoughts, increased self-confidence, increased or decreased concentration. More Salvia side effetcs are "unreal" appearing surroundings, increased insight (or thinking so..), spiritual experiences, strange thoughts, a floating feeling, calmness or yawning. Slight headaches have also been reported after using Salvia.
Salvia should definitely not be used as a recreational drug, althought it is highly recommended to use a "sitter" to prevent injury.
Salvia has extreme psychological effects. The user usually experiences a completely different reality, and may act accordingly. Also when an extract of unknown strength or a high dose is consumed, an observer is very much to be recommended. Undesirable accidents seem to be the only known problem currently, as the danger of Salvia is that the effects sets in immediately and a pipe may be dropped, causing a fire that can't be extinguished because the user is unable to function. The user of Salvia Divinorum may injure themselves due to lack of motoric control.
Well-known side effects of Salvia Divinorum are mild headache, bronchial irritation, irritability and insomnia.
Salvia greatly impairs the ability to drive. Most people think they are safe to drive three ours after using Salvia. Liquid Salvia (drinking the infusion) has an even longer effect on the ability to drive: At least up to 8 hours.

Salvia and mental illness

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder might become even more unstable when under the influence of Salvia. Some people suffering from clinical depression have reported that Salvia has lifted their depression, for others it could make a pre-existing depression acutely worse. For such a person there may be risk of suicide.
A potential danger of Salvia Divinorum is long-term brain damage, especially when pure Salvinorin is been used. Salvinorin has some phenomenological similarities to dissociatives such as ketamine and PCP, and these dissociatives can cause brain damage called Olney's Lesions when taken in at high doses.
Salvia may cause decreased heart rate, increased perspiration, changes in body temperature, inability to maintain balance, loss of coordination, chills, inability to control muscles and short-term effects on motor-control. The effects of salvia are typically short-lived.
Salvia side effects are immediate physical effects such as loss of control over motor functions. Salvia Divinorum can trigger panic attacks. Individuals with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders (even if in remission) might experience a Salvia induced relapse or exacerbation of their condition.
Salvia is a hallucinogen, and one might risk getting flashbacks in the future.
Commonly reported side effects of Salvia Divinorum are nausea, migraines and a dry mouth.
Other side effects of Salvia Divinorum include uncontrollable laughter, revisiting past memories, visions of membranes, films and various two-dimensional surfaces, sensations of motion, or being pulled or twisted by forces, merging with, or becoming objects, overlapping realities, such as the perception of being in several locations at once.

Smoking Salvia Divinorum and its side effects

The dangers of Salvia are mainly the same as that of cigarettes in terms of the chance of lung cancer and other illnesses.
Other reported side effects of Salvia Divinorum are perceived time travel, traveling to other dimensions, meeting mystical creatures, improved mood, calmness, seeing through walls, increased insight, increased connection with the universe or nature, a floating feeling, out of body experiences, lucid dreaming and increased self-confidence.
Dangers of Salvia are difficulty concentrating, decreased self-confidence and a worsened mood.
When using Salvia Divinorum, sometimes extreme outbreaks of sweating occur. In particular in inexperienced users or when the effects are unexpectedly powerful, anxiety, panic and especially disorientation may easily set in. Sometimes users go around without noticing their surroundings and accidents may happen. There is therefore a real risk of doing unintentional damage to oneself, if there is no observer at hand, even if this condition does not last very long. It may also happen that the user may not remember that he has taken a drug. These Salvia side effects depend on the dose.

William White, a DXM researcher, concluded that Olney's lesions were forming in humans, but retracted his statement in 2004. In 2003, Cliff Anderson, a researcher and critic, wrote an article that illustrated that the tests conducted by Olney and Farber did not provide any conclusive evidence that lesions develop in human brains after exposure to dissociatives.

I smoked Salvia quite a few times. I wouldn't smoke 60X as I did. It is very powerful. The effects are pretty much as listed. The "trip" lasts about 10 minutes. Even with a fairly small pinch I was off to other dimensions. Hard to describe. Nothing else like it. One thing, you should definitely have someone watching you, cause you can mess some stuff up in a house. Never hurt myself, but i could have. The pleasantness, to me, came AFTER the tripping.. everything was very clear and looked brand new..a sense of euporia and energy for about thirty minutes. the trip itself is too mind warping to be pleasant, and can lead to a full blown panic attack, because you feel as if time and space have been obliterated..I also senses strongly a light shining on me that was my loving mother who had passed..very real and astounding. If you chew the leaf, it is much more pleasant and you will be in control, even if you halucinate a bit..be careful on getting up, as it affects your coordination quite a bit. Better to chew leaves than to smoke extract.

I am a Verde Brujo, and Salvia is a tool for my spirit work as well healing. This is a sacred plant, safe with extreme effects, but I advise only Shamans or the ones with knowledge to use it.

If you are not familiar with just being your consciousness and leaving your body behind don't do this. If you can't fathom suddenly realizing you have never been a "human" don't do it. If you can't accept that when you take salvia you fall out of the matrix for a few minutes don't do it. I still am unable to decide if the beings on the other side of the fence mean me harm or are simply trying to communicate the way they do and I can't accept it yet. There is another world and if your not ready to visit it don't do salvia. From terrifying to fascinating, salvia taught me to love the time I have existing in the way I currently do.

A a low dose (smoked) my skin started burning and itching uncomfortably. At a high dose my balance was lost and I felt discomfort similar to motion sickness.
It felt like only one ear (ssc) was sending correct information and it kept swapping which ear was 'working'.
There was no pleasantness, I smoked it with a friend after not seeing him for a while. Was in a positive mind set, not scared. Just completed a very difficult phase of my masters program, had, for the first time in a long term, comparatively low levels of stress.
With other hallucinogenics I have had much better experiences, even when having 'bad trips'.
I suffer from pretty severe depression and the salvia, if anything, made it worse for a short time and now, a month later, I am quite sure it had 'no' positive or negative medium-term effect.

I did salvia in October of 2015. Overall it was an eye opening experience for me. For the first two weeks or so I felt completely fine. Soon after that I started experiencing spaciness, and a complete disconnect with reality. On and off for weeks would I experience this. There was a point where I became completely emotionally incapable. I just felt numb. It is now December 27, 2015 and it feels like more side effects have intensified. I've been depressed and not myself at all. I still have my good days but the bad ones are tough to manage without tears. Did this plant effect me biologically and mentally beyond it's normal time? Is there anyway to combat these side effects. A body cleanse, something someone can recommend. Please email me dareayoola92@yahoo.com it t anyone has any suggestions. I am anticipating your help and responses. Thank you.

I am currently going thru school as well and had went to go see a friend I knew from Georgia who had moved closer near my a family member of mine. I had no intention on doing anything just to visit and say hi. The idea of doing Salvia was presented to me and the possibilities it could unlock for me as well. He called it getting to the other side of the pillar. I finally convinced myself to just try it and I want fearful at all. The experience was eye opening but I think the dose I took was very heavy. I just haven't been the same. Hope you are doing better my friend. I was forget this happened entirely.

I think this is the best description of the effects of salvia. You really have to be comfortable with yourself or really have to be ok with the search of knowledge and not judge the answers you have found. I have never been that spiritual but always felt that something was off this helped me cope with the world and my consciousness in this state and being. I found that i didn't mind just being enveloped by the flow of energy but wasn't ready to submit to it completely as i missed my self and friends and family. Enjoy your time in the sun because you will never be prepared for the other side. Just know that there is another side to the universe!

I have tried salvia of different concentrations a number of times, usually through a bong. The experiences were as listed above, very profound hallucinations. I've always been a seeker of further knowledge, and this herb will definitely open your conciousness if your are open to it and can accept what you find. One danger to consider is if you suffer from heart defects or cardiomyopathies. This herb can acfect the heart, and does have long term side effects similar to other hallucinagens such as LSD. psycological and lack of motor control is possible, even years after high doses.

Also as with any drug, biochemical imbalances can occur and should be adressed promptly. You must use this herb with extreme caution and responsibility and mental preparedness. I personally am not apposed to trying low doses such as chewing the leaves again in the future, to induce a more mild experience.
